Just starting out in the world of graphic design? Or doing some self-study so you can create your own content?

You might be wondering what it takes to give your designs that level of professionalism and polish. Or conversely, what are the dead-giveaways to sloppy work?

Here at BlueMelon we want the world to be filled with beautiful designs. So here are the five essential skills you will need to master when starting out in Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator.

1. HOW TO ALIGN OBJECTS PERFECTLY

Perfect alignment and distribution of objects is the key to a polished document. Use the tools in the Align tab from start to finish for a professional result.

2. HOW TO USE GUIDES

Let InDesign guide you. You may have an eagle eye but using guides is the best way to ensure precision placement of pixels. If they’re cramping your style, switch them off and on again.

3. HOW TO USE LAYERS

Layers are your best friend when it comes to organising your document. Rename them, colour them, lock them. Use them any way that suits you but make good layering a habit in your process.

4. HOW TO GET THE RIGHT BLEED FOR PRINT

In the world of print, bleed is as essential as oxygen is to the human lung. A good rule of thumb is a bleed of no less than 3mm, but speak to your printer if you’re unsure of how much to include.

5. CHEK YO SPELLIN

OK, Captain Obvious, thanks for that. While it may not be the most glamorous design tip, proofing your own work is essential if you want to demonstrate professionalism.

BlueMelon is a full-service creative agency proud to partner with brands including LinkedIn, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Telstra and AMEX.
